Weekends

So we have just been hanging out in the southern Colorado New Mexico border area for the past few weeks. We plan on being here a bit longer and I think it is a much needed weekend.

Weekends are typically considered days off. Days off from work and the routine of a scheduled life that most of us participate in to make money , raise a family and accomplish goals we set for ourselves. We tend to limit these things to just the work week, Monday through Friday and we pretty much know what we need to do every day and then when the weekend comes we are free to do what we want.

Now we have not been on a set schedule or routine for the last few months other than the routine of getting the camper ready to transit and setting up when we get where we are going. It may seem like all of this has been one big weekend but in discussion it seems we did not think of it this way but more of that we did not get days off, so we are taking a few.

Life in Southern Colorado is relaxed and really from day to day we do not have set or scheduled things we want to do or need to do so these are days off.

I think about my career sometimes in reference to days off. Have I really had them or was it just the perception of not having to go to work or kids going to school or dance class, baseball volunteer events or grocery shopping. Did I really have days off or were they just other days to do the scheduled things that you don’t do during the week. And was work really so structured that I knew what I had to do from day to day? No

Work for the past decade with the exception of the last two years has been a chaotic mess at best. You actually start your day at the end of the previous day thinking of a plan for the next day. Things that did not get done or new things that have come up and the the next morning roles around and overnight some piece of equipment has failed or someone quit or any other number of things that you did not think would have to get done that day. You had a plan remember the day before of what you were going to do today, but that is shot to hell in the first few seconds of getting to work the following day.

Many people will tell you they thrive on the pressure and the chaos, I’m not sure I do any more. I used too, I had most of the answers to anything that could just spontaneously combust and throw a wrench into your well planned day. So in this time it was not a big deal and the pressure did not feel like it was going to be too overbearing to my well planned day so it was not to cumbersome . However I think there has to be another way. I got tired of reacting all the time instead of planning and following through.

But a day off should be just that. Not a day to do all the things you did not get to in your work week but a day off. No plans no expectations no hurry.

The leaves are turning,

The air is crisp,

Thoughts wander to things of imagination,

You can think with a clear mind.

Hmm that cloud looks like an alligator, I’m starting to like weekends!

A Grand Adventure

Pardon the title but it was a pun. None of these photos will make even a small impression, I don’t think they make a big enough camera lens to capture the Grand Canyon, you have to see it!

We made our Grand entrance on the east side of the Canyon and our destination was Trailer Village. I think we felt pretty lucky to be able to spend 3 full days in the park but lucky is just not a Grand enough word for it.

Life On The Ranch, RMNP

For some reason I think all of us would trade in our wingtips for a pair of boots and spurs. The Cowboy nostalgia is still alive today and I think just maybe it will never go away.

After leaving Estes Park we travelled through Rocky Mountain National Park via Route 34, the Trail Ridge Road. Now this road, though paved, is no more than a 2 lane standard road with 10% up and down grades and more switch backs than I can count.

Of course we get the “Holy Shit what is that” look from people when they see 68′ of truck and trailer coming at them on a 180 deg corner. I’m getting used to it and if they can’t figure out which side of the road is their side, well I can’t fix that.

Wind Caves, Nebraska and Estes Park

When we left Rushmore.m, we headed south with the plan of going into Nebraska since we had never been there.

Luck has it that our route took us right through Wind Caves National Park. Though we didn’t have time for a tour into the caves, we did take a look around the information center and learned some about the caves themselves and the original explorers.

When we were driving through the area, we saw all of these prairie dogs. They were so cute, and photogenic!

The kids also found this huge caterpillar on the sidewalk. So addy picked it up and moved it to a leafy bush.

And we saw these buffalo just roaming along side the road.

As we continued towards Nebraska, we passed through the town of Hot Springs, where a majority of the buildings were this cool red rock. Some were real, and others had a facing to make more modern structures match. It gave the town this neat feel.

We finally crossed the line, headed towards our campground for the night.

We spent just one night in Scottsbluff at this nice state campground that had a great price, full hook-ups and a small lake nearby.

We moved on in the morning to Estes Park, Colorado.

Passing through the canyon into town was quite spectacular, with goats standing on the cliff sides (of course my camera hand wasn’t fast enough).

With two nights, we were able to arrive and relax at the campground pool, then head into town for delicious BBQ dinner!

With no specific plans for the following day, the kids slept in and then Addy hit the pool again!

We decided after everyone was up to take a bike ride around the lake. A 3.75 mile loop following the lake edge then down below the dam, with beautiful scenery all around!

Everyone was beat after this ride, so we headed back to the campground, and Andie got to meet some new friends at the dog park.

A nice relaxed evening, with thunder and lightening humming us to sleep!

Well after an almost flat tire and great save by Shawnda we were headed out to adventure once more.

Now you should know other than a very few destinations none of our wandering has been planned to even the day we are going to be somewhere or planned at all for that matter. There are of course places and people we want to visit but the in between is where adventure lies.

Now we were headed to the great Teton mountains but in doing so you have to go where no Gallup has gone before.

Though I feel like we have been sitting for too long here in Klamath Falls, OR we have not really been idle.

We have been taking care of a few things we have planned to do for some time and others that have come up since starting our adventure.

We installed a fence at our house here in Klamath which was in our plans from the start. Of course we did not plan on 90 deg temps while doing it but ahh what’s a little heat.

The Klamath County fair has been going on the past week so that warranted a visit.

They had a great shuttle from the parking lot to the main entrance to the fair. To be honest it was only a few hundred feet to walk but who could turn down a ride on this bad boy.

Now you should all know that Shawnda is not much for carnival rides, the spinning kind any way. So in good form I went off to ride the Ferris wheel with Addy and Alex wrangled Shawnda into going to ride the Rampage

Kids Say the Darndest Things!

One of the planned highlights of our trip through the Yukon was to ride the White Pass & Yukon Route train line. Now this is a train line that is over 100 years old and though it is maintained it is not for those who are accustomed to the red line in Boston.

This train actually derailed last year with passengers onboard. I made sure to state this loud enough so that the women sitting in front of Shawnda could hear. About halfway up the pass it became quite apparent that this women was incredibly afraid of heights, so I decided to have a little fun. Continue reading “Kids Say the Darndest Things!”

There is gold in them there hills? Stores

I can tell you where the gold is! I was given a map, won’t say where I got it. This map was supposedly supposed to lead to a great vein deposit of gold in the Yukon Territory. Now I am suspicious of everything so this was no different. The source of the information that I received came from a reliably source, but stranger stories have been told of gold in the hills.

If you can decipher what I have written and have a sense of adventure these words will lead you to great riches. Follow along and you may be able to figure it out. But I’m not going to just give it away so pay attention.

Imagination is Greater than Knowledge

We are off. Headed out to see what we have never seen or to see things we have in a different way.

We left Valdez Friday night and arrived safely at Slide Mountain. We could not resist visiting our friends here Josh and Anna Stark and their family at Slide Mountain Cabins and RV Park before we leave Alaska. Good friends are sometimes found not made and this is one of those cases. I have to personally thank them for hosting many of our adventures here in Alaska,

Ringing the Bell

Food is probably one of the things I am looking forward to the most on our upcoming adventure. It is a huge part of life and if you limit trying new things to eat you might as well stay home and munch on some cardboard.

Most people associate trying different foods with traveling abroad. Well this is not the case and some of the best ethnic and diverse culinary experiences can be found right here in the US of A. A simple one is fried chicken. Since KFC is just a fried dough ball with at best a chicken nugget in the middle it is hard for most people to fathom that fried chicken, real fried chicken can be better than the best Kobi beef in the world. Don’t believe me.
